Practice Areas

Verdi & Ogletree represents companies and individuals in court, before regulatory agencies, and in arbitrations. We listen carefully to our clients and provide counsel based on decades of experience. We always aim to resolve matters efficiently – and on the best possible terms.

Appellate Advocacy

The attorneys at Verdi & Ogletree are successful appellate advocates in both state and federal courts on wide range of criminal, civil, and administrative legal issues. The lawyers not only brief and argue appellate cases, they also serve as expert resources to other attorneys at the trial and appellate levels. They often provide guidance at all phases of litigation, research and draft
appellate briefs, and prepare for and conduct oral arguments.

Civil Litigation and Arbitration

The Verdi & Ogletree attorneys are accustomed to litigating a wide array of civil matters in state and federal courts, and before governmental agencies and arbitrators. Over their years of practice, they have accumulated significant experience in representing businesses (large and small, for profit and non-profit) and individuals in disputes involving business issues, insurance, securities, employment, healthcare, procurement fraud, defamation, discrimination, shareholders’ and creditors’ rights, corporate governance, contracts and tort suits, and unfair trade competition cases. Verdi & Ogletree also helps clients prevent lawsuits before they arise by devising and improving internal compliance programs, policies and procedures, and providing advice on employment matters. The lawyers at Verdi & Ogletree likewise have considerable experience in crafting and enforcing arbitration agreements and other alternative dispute resolution contracts.

Congressional Ethics and Investigations

Whether as prosecutors, senior staff, outside counsel, witness counsel, or defense counsel, Verdi & Ogletree attorneys have conducted and defended investigations involving allegations of ethical, civil, criminal, and employment-related violations by Members of Congress, congressional staff, and related third parties. The Firm advises and protects clients against the minefield of congressional rules and laws applicable not only to Members and their staffs, but also lobbyists, campaign officials, or anyone else who interacts with Congress. With experience in working with committees and senior leadership on both sides of the aisle, Verdi & Ogletree assists witnesses and subjects who are embroiled in congressional investigations. In matters before the Department of Justice, the Office of Congressional Ethics, the Ethics Committees of either chamber of Congress, or any other congressional committee, we have the skills and years of experience to chart the best path towards resolution for our clients, and to minimize the external effects and scandal of being associated with allegations of misconduct.

Criminal Defense

In addition to our white-collar practice, the lawyers at Verdi & Ogletree have represented clients in a wide-variety of criminal cases, including cases involving obstruction of justice, conspiracy to misdemeanor cases including traffic matters, theft, destruction of property, violation of open container laws and misdemeanor possession of narcotics.  In addition, we have represented many high-profile defendants and are experienced in coordinating public relations campaigns in connection with a criminal defense when necessary.  We always consider all possible resolutions to a criminal matter and work closely with our clients to determine the most appropriate strategy for navigating each stage of the process.  We also have experience in assisting clients with collateral matters that arise from the filing of criminal charges, including the effect such a charge may have on security clearances to charges leading to disciplinary action at the college or university level.  Our lawyers also have experience in successfully expunging records in qualifying cases.  We are confident that our lawyers can assist our clients through this difficult process by providing thoughtful and responsive guidance in a cost-effective manner.

Employment Advice and Defense

Working as a partner with employers, Verdi & Ogletree provides advice to help companies manage their workforces. The firm represents employers of all sizes and types to analyze risk, conduct and guide internal investigations, review policies and internal documents, and defend charges, administrative actions, and litigation. Verdi & Ogletree recognizes that there is no “one size fits all” employment advice, and listens carefully to employers to understand the unique character of each workplace and the employer’s goals.

Internal Investigations

The firm has represented Boards of Directors, as well as private companies, to conduct independent internal investigations on a wide array of matters, including employee misconduct, insider trading, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and the Foreign Agents Registration Act.  In conducting investigations, the firm ensures that corporate management is aware of all
compliance issues and possible regulatory risks, and creates compliance programs to help minimize the danger of future litigation or government enforcement actions.

Securities Litigation and Enforcement

The lawyers at Verdi & Ogletree are fierce and experienced advocates for their clients in private securities litigation and enforcement proceedings instituted by the SEC, CFTC, FINRA, and other federal and state regulators. Verdi & Ogletree provides sophisticated legal advice to clients in navigating the heavily-regulated securities industry. The firm also conducts internal investigations and, when necessary, defends private and regulatory enforcement actions and criminal proceedings.

White Collar Criminal Defense and Government Investigations

The firm has extensive experience representing individual and corporate clients in investigations conducted by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other federal, state, and local agencies. Verdi & Ogletree attorneys have represented both individuals and corporations in matters involving allegations implicating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, bribery and gratuities, as well as health care fraud, mail and wire fraud, and criminal tax.  The firm’s lawyers have experience assisting clients through this difficult process, and assertively defending against any charges.
